I ordered it from ColorWare back on January 6th and I’ve been waiting patiently for the last 2 months for it to arrive. And this is it! I think it looks awesome! So when the PS4 launched, the first thing I wanted was a non-black controller, yet with the PS5, all I wanted was a black one again. Mental.
ColorWare actually use brand new controllers, they take them apart, spray each part and build them back up. This means when it arrives it comes in the original box and packaging, the same as if you’d bought it new.
As mentioned it took just under 2 months to arrive, which wasn’t too bad considering I’m in the UK. it was shipped within 6 weeks and then took 2 weeks to get here.
Colour
Although there are hundreds of colour combos, this is the spec I went for, in case you want to copy me like for like. It took some time working out which black to go for, as there’s 4 choices, solid, metallic, matte and gloss.
I chose the carbon black and jet black options in matte for all options.
I think this combo works really well, and you could say this is how the DualSense should have launched. It kind of looks original, without looking modded if that makes sense.
Different colours
I really like the matte black look, but if this is a little understated or boring, there are loads of different colours combos available. You can change the body or the handles, the middle part where the speaker is, the buttons and the trackpad. All of these can be solid or metallic, gloss or matte. So there are hundreds of colour combos available.
The body is also the back colour too, that’s all one part, something worth mentioning.
Official
When I shared the post over on Instagram, some assumed it wasn’t an official controller, but it’s 100% real, it’s just a colour change on the original shell. So no skin or rubber case here, which means it should last a lot longer and be more robust in terms of the paint finish.
Unfortunately the tiny details that can be seen on a normal DualSense controller can’t really be seen now, I assume that’s down to the thickness of the primer or paint that’s used. And obviously the branding is gone completely on the rear.
Warranty
Something I was concerned about when ordering this controller is the warranty. The normal Sony warranty is obviously voided as soon it’s taken apart, so Sony won’t help if anything goes wrong. But fortunately ColorWare provides their own 1 year warranty with all new products. I’m not sure how that works, and being in the UK I imagine it’ll cost me a bit to send it back. But the fact it comes with warranty is awesome.
Setup
Just like with any new controller, it’ll need setting up at first. All you need to do is plug a USB cable into the controller and into the PS5, then go through the setup process. It’ll likely need to install an update, and then that’s it, it’s ready to use.
Fingerprints
So I went for the matte black option, and one thing I did notice was just how easy the finger prints show up. I mean it’ll only take a quick wipe, but not something I even thought about when ordering.
Faceplates
I’ve recently ordered the dbrand matte black faceplates too, so they should both look awesome together. Which is funny, because every other PlayStation console, apart from the PS1, was black at launch.
Cost
and it cost me $155 including shipping, so already that is double the price of a normal controller. They
Next
I’m so impressed with this, that I’m already looking at the Xbox Series X controllers as well as maybe getting a 20th Anniversary one made up, to look like my DualShock 4 controller. That’s definitely my all time favourite PS4 controller. It would be cool to have one on the PS5 now.
